Boardgame Workshop

Visually design a boardgame, get guided suggestions about which mechanics work well together, and play the result right on the computer.

Exploring Started: July 2026 Updated: July 2026

Overview

A design-and-play workbench for boardgames. You lay out a game visually, the tool advises you on which mechanics fit together, and then you can actually play what you designed — all in the browser.

How It Works

Four parts communicate through a single JSON game definition. The Designer is a visual editor (board track, mechanics, cards, rules, theme). The Advisor runs live analysis — synergy suggestions, conflict warnings, a complexity budget, and structural checks. The Player runs the designed game on screen (roll-and-move, cards, sets, push-your-luck, action points, wagers, power-card hands, catch-up boosts, income/interest, bingo, tug-of-war duels, trading, and more). The Library lets you browse all 189 mechanics with subject and skill filters. Games auto-save to local storage and export/import as .json.

Current Status

Working end-to-end; the 189-mechanic dataset is analyzed specifically for educational use, so the Advisor can reason about learning goals, not just game balance.
