3D Lunatic Fringe

Lunatic Fringe — the space shooter from After Dark — rebuilt for the browser from the 1993 .AD file, playable in the original top-down 2D or a new 3D view.

Exploring Started: Sept 2026 Updated: Sept 2026

Overview

A faithful re-creation of Lunatic Fringe, the game module from Berkeley Systems’ After Dark (Ben Haller; Windows port by Mike Overlin, 1991–93), rebuilt from the original Lunatic Fringe.ad file. It plays in the original top-down 2D view, and you can switch to a 3D chase cam or cockpit view mid-game — same ships, enemies, and asteroids, now in three dimensions.

How It Works

It was reverse-engineered from the original .ad resource file; the art and sounds are extracted from it and belong to their authors, so the build is kept private. The 3D ships were modeled through the Blender MCP server. Controls hew to the original: Caps Lock / Enter to enter the Fringe, Ctrl to flip through the info screens, J / L or the arrows to turn, K or up to thrust.

Current Status

Playable in the browser, switchable between the original 2D and the new 3D views.
